About the course
Course content
Simple introduction to mechanics with a focus on application in material selection. Calculation and analysis of simple mechanical models in the "SolidWorks" computer program. Systematic material and process selection for selected products with the main focus on mechanical design (Ashby's method of using material indices and the computer program "GRANTA Edupack"). Sustainable material and process selection and simple life cycle analyzes for selected products.
Learning outcome
The candidate:
- can explain and apply relevant formulas and tables in mechanics with a focus on bending beams - knows the basic principles of mechanical modeling and can use them to perform calculations and analysis of simple mechanical models in the "SolidWorks" computer program.
- have knowledge of methods for systematic material selection and can use these methods in the computer tool "GRANTA Edupack" to make good and reasoned material choices for selected products
- can apply knowledge about processes for forming, joining and coating of materials to organize and compare processes, and make a systematic and justified choice.
- has insight into the environmental, economic and societal consequences of material and process choices, and can apply the knowledge to make simple life cycle analyzes, make more sustainable choices and discuss the choices.
- can plan, execute and disseminate project work in writing and orally, and participate in professional discussions in material and process selection focusing on mechanical design and sustainability.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, exercises, computer exercises and project work (including laboratory work, written report, oral presentation).
Expected Time Consumption:
- Lectures: 50 hours
- Own work: 60 hours
- Exercises: 15 hours
- Data exercises: 15 hours
- Projectwork: 60 hours
- Total: 200 hours
Compulsory assignments
- Project work
- Computer exercise
- Exercises
Further on evaluation
All compulsory work requirements (exercises, computer exerceice and project work) must be approved to take the final written examination. Project work must be approved to submit project report. Information about requirements for the number of approved exercises and details of mandatory activities will be provided in the project work at the beginning of the semester. In case of re-sit exam, written exam may be changed to oral exam. Voluntary repeating of the final written exam is possible, but not the project. For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
