About the course

Course content

Social studies 1 part 2 provides an introduction to the social sciences as areas of knowledge and school subjects with relevance for teaching at primary and secondary level.

In the field of democracy and citizenship, emphasis is placed on knowledge and understanding of politics and political processes, democracy and citizenship education with the main emphasis on Norwegian conditions.

On the topic of sustainable future, emphasis is placed on knowledge and understanding of conditions such as landscape, climate, resources and sustainable development.

The course draws some basic lines in Norwegian history and history didactics.

The subject thematizes social studies didactic perspectives on teaching, initial training, progression and assessment at primary and middle school.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE

  • Has broad knowledge of key topics, theories and processes in the fields of democracy and citizenship.
  • Has broad knowledge of key topics, concepts and processes related to creating a sustainable future.
  • Has broad knowledge of history didactic theories, central historical periods and social processes in Norwegian history
  • Has broad knowledge of social studies didactic perspectives on teaching, initial training, progression and assessment at primary and middle school.

SKILLS

  • Can identify connections between the course's thematic areas and explain how they interfere with each other
  • Can connect basic insights from themes in the subject to didactic theory of the social studies in the planning and implementation of teaching.
  • Able to develop and apply academic skills such as critical thinking and argumentation.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

  • Can facilitate that students can reflect independently and critically on issues in social studies based on knowledge and familiarity with different perspectives.
  • Has a reflective and critical perspective on how to create a sustainable future, and specifically sub-themes such as landscape, resource and climate issues.
  • Can connect basic insights in Norwegian history to history didactic theory in the planning and implementation of teaching.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, independent and collaborative work, with and without tutoring. Work with compulsory and other assignments individually and collaboratively. Excursions/city walks.

Further on evaluation

Approved assignment(s) and/or test(s) of a written and/or oral nature must be completed in accordance with the subject description. Mandatory attendance at selected parts and introductory session.

The students can be assessed, imposed work requirements and attendance related to joint subjects.

The assessment for the course consists of a four-hour written school exam (weighted 51/100) and an individual academic paper (weighted 49/100).

The use of AI-generated text presented as one's own is not permitted in mandatory assignments and exams.

Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 1-7 (MGLU1-7) - some programmes
