Course content

In the area course, you will get an introduction to issues related to the use of technology in healthcare professional practice. You will learn how such technologies can have an impact on professional practice, on interprofessional collaboration and on the relationships between those who perform the services and those who receive them. Through student-active learning methods, you will learn how to engage in critical and analytical thinking related to both your own and other professions' use of technology in practical situations in the health services. You will learn to reflect systematically on the areas of use of various technologies and the impact these have on the development of professional subjects and health services in general. You will get an introduction to a theoretical perspectives on "understanding technology" and related terms that will help you identify and discuss issues related to learning new technology in the workplace, the use of technology in practice, the "weight" of technologies in the health service and their influence on various professions in the area of healthcare.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, students should have:

  • Broad knowledge of "understanding technology"
  • Knowledge of theoretical perspectives on "understanding technology"
  • Knowledge of the connections between trends in technology development, health policy and professional practice
  • Knowledge of perspectives on professions, professionalization and professionalism
  • Knowledge of issues related to ethics and patient safety when using technology
  • Prepared to update knowledge of main types of technology in own profession

Skills

Students should acquire skills necessary to:

  • Apply knowledge of understanding technology to practical issues related to the use of technology in their own and other professions' practice
  • Reflect on the significance of technology for professions' professionalism and identity, interprofessional collaboration and relationships with patients and relatives
  • Reflect on their own and other professions' use of technology and propose adjustments to methods of use in the light of ethical and patient safety considerations
  • Reflect on the connections between trends in technology development, health policy and professional practice
  • Find, evaluate and refer to information and subject matter on the main types of digital technology used in own professional practice and present this in a critical, constructive fashion

General competence

Students should develop the following general competencies:

  • Insight into relevant professional issues linked to the use of technology in their own and other professions' practice
  • The ability to plan and carry out tasks related to innovation and the use of technology in line with requirements for ethics and patient safety both alone and as part of a group
  • The ability to communicate key aspects and issues in understanding technology both in writing and orally
  • The ability to exchange views and experiences together with colleagues in their own and other professions on issues related to the use of technology, thereby contributing to the development of good quality practice
  • Knowledge of connections between trends in technology development, health policy and professional practice
  • The ability to find, evaluate and refer to information and subject matter on the main types of technology in own professional practice and present this in such a way that it illuminates possibilities and challenges related to the use of the technology

Learning methods and activities

This is an online course where the teaching entails a combination of digital lectures, digital and physical collaboration in student groups, and digital and face-to-face student assignments.

The course language is Norwegian. If exchange students apply for the course, arrangements for adjusting the course language and exam to English will be provided.
