Course content

Practical and theoretical introduction to sound installations, spatialisation, sensors and microcontrollers, programming interactive installations, relevant esthetic problems and art-historical context.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate
- has insight into the use of sound in arts and as a carrier of semantic content beyond the musical expression
- has knowledge of central concepts in contemporary art in general and sound-based works in particular through representative examples
- knows central concepts for characterization and quality assessment of everyday listening and soundscapes

Skills:

The candidate
- can plan and implement sound art projects of his/her own
- can do practical work with sensors and microcontrollers in conjunction with interactive sound art
- can make sound compositions based on other premises than music alone
- can formulate a project description that includes artistic, technical, administrative and economical issues

Learning methods and activities

Lectures: 2 hours per week for 12 weeks. Exercises: The exercises will be practical work on composition or sound installations. The exercises may also be written reflection tasks.

Required previous knowledge

MUST1060 Basic Music Technology 2 (or MUST1052). Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme in Music Technology.
