About the course
Course content
The course offers a more profound insight into theoretical and methodological issues in Media Education and into the challenges related to the media development in the globalized world. The course focuses on knowledge development, ethics, bildung and democracy in the interface between media and education and between informal and formal education. This implies analysing and discussing current phenomena and issues in media culture, children- and youth culture and school culture. Attention is also given to media literacy and to perspectives on coping and participation in the mediatized society. Media Bildung and Media Education builds on PED2014 Media Education and Media Literacy, but can also be combined with other courses in Education as well as in Media Studies.
Learning outcome
Through the course literature, lectures and seminars, active participation and self-study, the students should acquire in-depth knowledge, theoretical insights and analytical competence related to:
- Research traditions and methods in Media education.
- Media didactic issues.
- Perspectives on media bildung and media literacy.
- Media educational challenges in the globalized world.
- Perspectives on democratic citizenship, coping and participation in the mediatized society.
- Ethical aspects of the new media culture.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching is divided between lectures, seminars, and supervision. The teaching may be organized in blocks. Some lectures will be held in English.
Mandatory activities
Mandatory activities are specified by the course instructor at the start of the semester and must be passed before the exam. The activities are as follows:
• Obligatory presentation of the semester assignment
• Mandatory participation in the seminar where the semester assignments are presented
Compulsory assignments
- Oral presentation of the semester assignment
- Mandatory submission of a course assignment
- Mandatory presentation of a course assignment
- Mandatory participation in seminar where course assignments are presented
Further on evaluation
The exam consists of a semester assignment. Guidelines and requirements for the semester assignment will be provided at the start of the semester. Supervision for the semester assignment will be given during class time.
Required previous knowledge
The same admission requirements as for the master`s program in Education or another relevant master program within the social sciences or humanities, for instance media studies or sociology. The required prerequisite knowledge must be fulfilled in order to be admitted to the course.

The course has a core reading material of approximately 500 pages.
