Course content

The course is part of the professional education courses in the 5-year-integrated master study programmes for teacher education, and is one of four practical teacher training courses within the programme. It is comprised of 15 classroom hours, 2 hours of SIL, and 120 minutes of guidance. It makes up 10 of the total 100 days of internship throughout the study. The field of practical training is considered an important arena for learning and it emphasizes connections between theory and experience.
All practical training is supervised and mentored, and occurs in authentic occupational situations with pupils in a classroom. As part of their training, the students will go to a middle school program from 8th through 10th grade, as well as a secondary high school program from grades 11 to 13. Students with an academic background in common core subjects will visit different study programs
-- both vocational and general -- as part of their practice.
In practical teacher training 1 the student will gain excellent teaching experience through systematic observation and communication with students and teachers. This course places emphasis on the classroom as an arena for academic, social, and democratic learning.

Learning outcome

The student
- has insight into factors that affect the student community and create the basis for learning.
- has insight into different perspectives and views on how to manage and lead a classroom.

The student is able to complete a systematic observation in a classroom/workshop.

General competence
The students are able to cooperate and communicate with fellow students, pupils in the classroom, and teachers/lecturers.

Learning methods and activities

The course is held in the autumn semester for the teacher program in social science, history, English, French, and German, and in the spring for the teacher program in science, geography and the Nordic languages.

All practical teacher training is obligatory.

Practical Teacher Training 1 contains an observation practice that will be completed in groups.

In order to achieve the goals of the course, students are required to interact with the experiences from the training through reflection, and from various theoretical perspectives.

Compulsory assignments

  • 15 hours observation
  • Counselling meeting
  • The schools cultural context

Further on evaluation

The final assessment in the course presupposes submitted and approved practice cards.

If the practical training is considered unsuccessful and not approved, the student has access to a new practice period once more. New practice may require that mandatory activities related to the practice training must be re-implemented.

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
