Course content

The course is part of the professional education courses in the 5-year-integrated master study programmes for teacher education, and is one of four practical teacher training courses within the programme. It makes up 35 of the total 100 days of practical teacher training of the whole degree. The field of practical training is considered an important arena for learning and it emphasizes connections between theory and experience.

All practical training is supervised and mentored. It occurs in authentic occupational situations with pupils in a classroom. The students will as a part of their training visit a middle school program from 8th through 10th grade, as well as secondary high school from grades 11 to 13. Students with academic backgrounds in common core subjects will visit various study programs -- vocational and general -- as part of their practice.

During Practical teacher training 3 the student will teach his or her two subjects and -- through cooperation and mentoring from a mentor -- get a very clear impression of a teacher’s day at work. The focus will be on mastery in the classroom, understanding the teacher’s roles, and reflection of the student’s own development during the practical teacher training.

The described learning outcomes are the same for all students, but the emphasis will vary according to the context of the practical training. The descriptions of the learning outcomes presuppose and require approved earlier practical teacher training-courses.

Practice Teaching Training 3 consists of an integrated teaching practice that will be completed individually or in pairs. During the course the student will conduct 25 hours of lecturing in each of their two subjects.

To achieve the aim of the course, students must interact between their practical experiences and theoretical perspectives, and must reflect on both.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment in the course presupposes a submitted and approved practice card. The final assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of the teaching practice related to the curricula goals, wherein which corresponding reports and practice visits are included.

If the practice teaching is not approved, the student will be able to undergo one additional practice teaching session. During a new practice teaching session the student may be asked to engage in new obligatory activities.

Required previous knowledge

All previous exams according to the study plan must be passed, and all prerequisites must be fulfilled in order to start the course.
