Course content

The course is part of the professional education courses in the 5-year-integrated master study programmes for teacher education, and is one of four courses students take in subject didactics.

The course covers topics relating to teaching and to pupils' learning. Learning comprises both cognitive, bodily, aesthetic and creative learning processes. The learning process is also affected by affective aspects, such as motivation, attitudes, identity and emotions.

The course gives students a basis for planning, carrying out, evaluating and reflecting on teaching, based on academic and experience-based knowledge and theory. Analysing and observing connections between different perspectives, theories and research studies is an integrated element in the course objectives. Knowledge about and insight into subject-didactical theory and research provides students with the competencies they need in order to conduct systematic research- and development projects in schools.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of theories relating to teaching, learning and learning strategies
  • has knowledge of adapted teaching and of adjusting the teaching to pupils in various study programmes
  • has thorough knowledge of different types of assessment in education
  • has knowledge of the subject area's social relevance
  • has thorough knowledge of the subject as a school subject

Skills

The student

  • can plan, conduct and reflect on teaching, based on research- and experience-based knowledge and theories about teaching and pupils' learning
  • can vary and adjust the teaching according to the current curriculum
  • can assess and document the pupils' learning, provide formative response and contribute to the pupils' meta-reflections on own learning and academic development
  • can apply research- and experience-based knowledge to work systematically with the pupils' subject-specific learning and contribute to promote a good social and academic learning environment
  • can engage with academic literature, analyse and relate critically to information sources and subject-didactical theory
  • can utilize relevant social research methods, contribute to development work and, with help from a supervisor, conduct a professional research- and development project

General competence

The student

  • can reflect critically on and discuss professional, subject-didactical and subject-ethical questions
  • can raise subject-relevant questions, examine and discuss these critically and independently with the help of theoretical and empirical knowledge and hence contribute to the development of practices

Learning methods and activities

The course is the second part of subject didactics within the 5-year-programme, and the teaching takes place in the spring term.

Realization of the course objectives requires an interplay between subject disciplinary competence, teaching competence, acquisition of subject didactical theories and terminologies as well as reflection on own teaching practice and cooperation with the practice schools. The students will experience a variation of teaching methods and activities, and also different learning arenas.

Interdisciplinarity is emphasized across the courses in subject didactics, as when students conduct a group-based research- and development project including a process report. The research- and development project is conducted in one of the students' two courses in subject didactics (referred to as subject A).

A certification responsibility has been ascribed to NTNU, to ensure that students master key competences for their future profession as teachers for grades 8-13. A minimum of 75 % attendance is hence required to be allowed to sit the exam in the course. It is essential that students develop into independent and responsible teachers who are able to cooperate with peer students and future colleagues. Personal effort is hence important not only for own learning, but also for peers' and colleagues' professional development. All obligatory activities must be approved before students can sit the exams.

Compulsory assignments

  • Compulsory paper
  • Compulsory presentation
  • Compulsory participation in teaching periods
  • Compulsory work

Further on evaluation

The exam paper must be written in Spanish.

To obtain an overall passing grade, all individual parts must obtain a passing grade. A student who has not obtained an overall passing grade due to failing one of the partial assessments, needs to sit a new exam only in the failed partial assessment. The same rule applies for resit of a passing grade. The student can file a complaint only when the overall grade for the course has been announced. Provided that the student has accomplished all parts of the course, the student can choose to file a complaint also for individual parts of the overall course grade. See course schedule and a document describing the R&D-project for a more detailed description of the assessment in the course.

Required previous knowledge

Passed exams according to the study plan. The requirements relating to previous knowledge must be met prior to starting the course.
