Course content

The purpose of this course is to establish a methodological foundation for answering scientific. Students will gain knowledge of different qualitative and quantitative methods that are relevant in relation to the master’s study. This will enable students to carry out research projects at master's level that are in accordance with ethical and professional standards. Furthermore, students should be able to formulate scientific questions and plan research design, as well as communicate scientific results in writing and orally.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the following overall learning outcomes must be achieved:

Knowledge

Students must:

  • Be able to apply relevant research methods.
  • Be able to design and define scientific cases.
  • Be able to use research methods adapted to different questions.
  • Be able to prepare a research design for a given problem.

Skills

Students must:

  • Be able to design clear and good cases.
  • Be able to collect both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Be able to carry out an analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Be able to connect problem, theory and relevant empirical data in a systematic way.

General competence

Students must:

  • Be able to analyse a topic for a master's dissertation and choose an appropriate research method that is adapted to the project.
  • Be able to plan and design a research project.
  • Be able to convey research results both in writing and orally.
  • Have built up the ability for critical method reflection.
  • Be able to comply with current ethical guidelines and professional standards.

Learning methods and activities

Various forms of work and learning activities will be used with a combination of lectures, student presentations and essay writing.

Further on evaluation

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT WORK: Participation in a minimum of 75% of the learning activities. The activities are announced at the start of the course. In special cases where 75% participation is not satisfied, the student can enter into an agreement with the course coordinator (emneansvarlig) about alternative learning activities.

ASSESSMENT: Essay that counts 100% of the total grade. All aids allowed.

Postponed exam: Next time the course is completed.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Digital Transformation (ITMAIKTSA)

Required previous knowledge

The course is reserved for students admitted to the Master's Degree Program in Digital Collaboration.

Course literature is determined at the start of the course. Possible textbooks can be: Kvalitative forskningsmetoder i praksis, 2. edition by Aksel Tjora, (2012). - Research Design, by John W. Creswell, (2014).
