Mechanical Design, Operation and Maintenance of Hydraulic Machinery
About
About the course
Course content
Fundamental principles in machine construction based on the hydraulic strain and calculation of the strength of the chosen material for the pump- and turbine construction. Introduction in strength- and deformation calculation based on stress and permitted deformations regarding to clearance in the machine. erosion from cavitation for new and traditional materials. Typical measuring methods and analysis of vibration, noise and efficiency. Dynamic analysis and regulation, and insights into maintenance and auxiliary equipment. The course might be adapted extending this description.
Learning outcome
The course provides the student with knowledge about: - The mechanical equipment in hydropower plants, dimensioning of gates, valves, trash racks and cooling-and bilge system - Operation and maintenance - System dynamic simulation methods for water hammer, surges and governor stability - Hydraulic measurements in field and in the laboratory Knowledge The course gives the student insight about: - The mechanical equipment in a hydropower plant - Operational issues Skills The course should enable the student to: - Choose adequate equipment and give basis for technical-economical analysis - Simulate hydropower plants as regards system dynamics - Carry out measurements of efficiency, flow pressure, pressure transients etc. General competence The course should give the student: - Competence regarding hydropower plants mechanical equipment - Competence on the turbines interaction with the hydraulic conduit system, as well as with the generator and grid.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. Laboratory exercise. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. If less than 5 students are registered the course will be given as self-tuition.
