About

About the course

Course content

The course specializes within selected topics from Concrete Technology 1: hydration and pore structure development; property development and early age crack control and durability. The course also treats service life prediction, maintenance and repair of concrete structures, with focus on reinforcement corrosion, as well as sustainability.

Learning outcome

The course shall give the students theoretical and practical knowledge about young concrete, pore structure and service life, as well as maintance and repair concrete structures. Knowledge: - Basic understanding of the development of hydration as a function of binder composition, time and curing condidtions (temperature and moisture). - Basic understanding of maturity concept, curing technology, as well as the mechanisms and structural situations that govern cracking of concrete structures . - Basic understanding of the link between porosity, environmental conditions, moisture fixation and transport of matter. - Basic understanding of typical deterioration mechanisms and controlling parameters. - Knowledge on the structural impact of deterioration. - Knolwledge on the applicability of selected methods for inspection of concrete. - Knowledge on the applicability of selected maintenance and repair methods - Awareness of factors affecting sustainability of concrete structures. Skills: - Ability to estimate the porosity of concretes with typical compositions - Ability to perform simple stress calculations of hardening concrete structures and to evaluate countermeasures against cracking. - Ability to estimate the time to initiation of reinforcement corrosion for typical concrete structures. - Ability to propose methods for inspection of typical concrete structures - Ability to propose methods for maintenance and repair of typical concrete structures affected by reinforcement corrosion. General competence: - Ability to select materials for typical concrete structures in consideration of combined effect of structural detailing, materials, execution, and environmental exposure.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, colloquiums, group works and exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegain take the course.
