Course content

The aim of this subject is to provide students with practice on designing a marine system by applying previous knowledge. Students are required to evaluate the need for acquiring new knowledge, and obtaining this new information. Lectures on less common topics will be provided. Students will receive tuition on how to carry out a market survey and how to develop, evaluate and choose ideas.

Learning outcome

When finishing this course the student should be able to solve a design task of a marine system within a specified deadline. This involves:
Performing a market study
Developing ideas by using different methodologies for solving problems creatively
Developing relevant design criteria
Performing a methodical evaluation of the ideas based on the design criteria
Selecting the main dimensions, developing their chosen idea in detail and develop the arrangement of the vessel
develop the arrangement of the machinery based on the power requirements and the rest of the design
Using software tools actively in the design process
Solve the presented task in a groupe. Organise the group according to the tasks presented, and report the progress. Document the time used on task.
Document the design and the design process in a thorough report
Each group member is to contribute equally.

Learning methods and activities

The students will be working in groups on an assignment. Lectures, supervision and tuition will be provided on the project.
