Engineer the future. Collaborate with the ocean environment.

Get ready to tackle the world’s biggest challenges both at the surface of the ocean and beneath the waves. This programme is where high-tech engineering meets the power of the sea and design the solutions that drive the future of sustainable marine industries.

Core knowledge:

  • Solid foundation in marine structures, marine hydrodynamics, marine cybernetics, marine engineering, and marine systems design.
  • Deep understanding in at least one specialization area, close to the research frontier.
  • Insight into how marine technologies is developed, applied, and how they affect society and the environment.

Tools & theory:

  • Apply advanced math, physics, ICT, and simulation tools to solve real-world marine challenges.
  • Learn to model, design, analyse, and innovate within marine systems and structures.
  • Gain deeper insight through hands-on physical experiments

Skills you will gain

  • Solve complex problems — both technical and interdisciplinary — on your own or in teams.
  • Use advanced digital tools to design and evaluate marine technologies.
  • Plan and carry out engineering projects with ethical and professional integrity.
  • Conduct supervised research and development projects.

Broader competencies

  • Communicate your ideas clearly to both experts and the public.
  • Understand the global, ethical, and environmental impact of your work.
  • Think critically and creatively and contribute to sustainable innovation.
  • Work with an international mindset and be ready for a global career.

UN Sustainable development goals

We are dependent on the ocean to maintain the climate balance, produce clean energy, get food and transport, but the ocean is being polluted. As a student on Marine technology you get the knowledge about how we can realise the oceans resources sustainably.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed his or her qualification should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The Marine Technology study program encompasses technology, techniques and methods connected to design, engineering, construction, and operation of marine systems and structures.

The study program provides wide fundamental knowledge of the field of Marine Technology and advanced knowledge of at least one of the program’s specialisation subjects: Marine Structures, Marine Hydrodynamics, Marine Cybernetics, Marine Engineering and Marine Systems Design.

The knowledge and skills obtained during the course of study enable graduates to contribute to the development of technological solutions for existing and future marine technology-based industry and resource management. The course of study also provides the foundation for a research career.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • ability to apply relevant knowledge in mathematics, physics, statistics, natural science and ICT in order to understand marine technology applications, relevant systems and methods, and contribute to innovation, research and development within the marine disciplines
  • advanced knowledge of core elements of marine technology, and a deep understanding of methods and tools for design, development, analysis, modelling, simulation, problem-solving, and innovation within the field of marine technology, including marine structures, systems and operations.
  • specialised knowledge within at least one specialisation subject. The knowledge is expected to reach a level close to the state of the art within relevant academic and industrial research and development work. This knowledge shall form a basis for useful contributions to innovation and new knowledge within the field.
  • knowledge about the history and development of technology, related ethical questions, an engineer’s role and responsibilities in society, and consequences of technology development and application in general but especially within marine technology.
  • Knowledge of teamwork, motivation, organisation, and management.

Skills

The candidate shall be able to:

  • identify, define, model, develop, and analyze complex theoretical, technical, cross-disciplinary, and practical problems within marine technology and other closely related fields, both independently and in a team, and be capable of making well-reasoned choices of methods for solving the relevant problems.
  • consider, apply, and further develop relevant and advanced ICT tools.
  • design, develop and analyze systems, components and structures using the specialized knowledge that the candidate has acquired.
  • plan and carry out technological projects and assignments independently and in a team
  • conduct a delimited research or development project with supervision, independently or in a team, following established ethical norms for engineering projects and research work.

General competencies

The candidate:

  • can efficiently communicate his or her own work through different publication channels and in different settings to both experts and non-specialists, including contribute to scientific publications within the field.
  • can reflect on environmental, societal, ethical, and economical consequences of products, processes and systems within the field of marine technology.
  • can think and act creatively, critically, constructively and respectfully, and understand how innovation and entrepreneurship contribute to sustainable societal development.
  • can demonstrate an international perspective on the discipline and contribute within the global market
