SFI FAST in short

SFI FAST: Knowledge and technology for next-generation aluminium product innovations

Our centre is hosted by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NTNU and brings together leading expertise from four NTNU departments and four research divisions within SINTEF Industry. In close collaboration with 16 industrial partners, the centre forms a strong interdisciplinary platform for research and innovation.

FAST aims to develop the knowledge and technologies required to enable the use of up to 100% recycled aluminium in advanced products and load-bearing structures without compromising strength, durability, or safety. Aluminium can be recycled indefinitely using only five percent of the energy required for primary production. However, current recycling practices often result in downcycling. FAST addresses this challenge by developing solutions that make recycled aluminium a competitive and climate-friendly alternative for demanding applications, including automotive components, power transmission lines, and bridges.
