About

About the course

Course content

The course is project-based and consists of a user-interface design project done in groups. The project focuses on practical use of field observations and iterative design/redesign with prototyping and usability testing. Relevant theory for the different phases of the user-centered design process will be presented. Be capable of balancing conflicting design requirements, e.g. in relation to sustainability.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The course gives knowledge of basic theory and current research related to user-centered design, interaction design and human-computer interaction.

Skills: It also gives practical experience with state-of-the-art methods for the user-centered design of graphical user interfaces (GUIs).

General competence: The project gives students experience working with design challenges in teams.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and project work in teams.

The course cannot be taken as distance learning. The project work is group-based, and successful completion requires all group members to meet physically on campus.

During the semester, the teams present their progress in "critique sessions" at regular intervals - with feedback from the lecturer.

Compulsory assignments

  • Attendance lectures

Further on evaluation

A minimum attendance of 80% at lectures is required.

A group grade is given based on the group's project report.

The report shall document the project and retake of the course will require new participation/deliverables in all activities. The final group report should document the project work and show ability to make us of relevant theory.

All students in the group will normally receive the same grade based on the group assignment. In special cases where a student has not contributed sufficiently, a student may be given individual grades based on documented lack of effort and/or workload.

In the event of voluntary repetition, fail (F) or valid absence, the entire course must be retaken in a semester with teaching.

Required previous knowledge

The course is only for students on the MSIT profiles "Interaction Design, Game, and Learning Technology" and "Software", MTDT/MIDT profile "Software", and LUR students specialising in "Mathematics and Informatics".

The course is only available to students admitted to these study program profiles/specializtions. The NTNU course planning system might allow other students to register for the course, but students not on the listed profiles will not be allowed to take the course.
