Course content
The main focus of the course is to build intelligent systems based on two key natural concepts: evolution by natural selection and swarm intelligence. Such intelligent systems have thousands of useful applications in fields as diverse as control theory, telecommunications, music and art. This course discusses both methods in great detail along with providing a bit of the biological basis for each.
Learning outcome
Students will get both theoretical and practical programming experience with two of the best known sub-symbolic AI methods: evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms.
Learning methods and activities
Regular lectures and exercises. The final grade is based 100% upon the practical work, which normally consist of large programming projects along with essays/theoretical exercises.
This course is programming intensive and thus does not suit students who dislike writing code. Groups of 2 students collaborate on programming projects that take ca 3-4 weeks. Further, most projects will require some individuelle effort, without the possibility to collaborate. The other exercises, that consists solely of a report/theoretical exercise, must be done individually, with no assistance given by one student to another.
Further on evaluation
Retake of the course will require new participation/deliverables in all activities.
