About the course

Course content

The course aims to equip students with essential knowledge and practical experience in establishing, managing, and utilizing information for a unified digital twin to promote sustainability within the built environment. The course will also include user perspectives and requirements on the digital twin. It will explore both theoretical frameworks and hands-on practices related to digital twins. Digital twins will be used throughout the whole life cycle of buildings/infrastructure, from planning, design, construction, operation/maintenance, demolishing/renovation, and recycling/upcycling.

The course focuses on, e.g.:

  • Conceptualization and definition of digital twin
  • Requirements for digital twins
  • Establishment and data transfer in digital twins
  • IoT communication technologies and protocols
  • Integration of building information
  • Current maturity, limitations, and challenges
  • Assessment of the need for ontology development/semantic solutions

Learning outcome

After completing the course, students can:

  • identify tasks where digital twins will be useful
  • analyze and evaluate user needs and other guidelines for digital twins
  • set up requirements for digital twins (including requirements for data content, process / decision support and user involvement / visualizations)
  • Know how to establishing, managing, testing, and using digital twins
  • Understand the interaction between virtual and physical environment.

Learning methods and activities

The course is conducted as compressed teaching modules/seminars in the beginning and middle of the spring semester. It ends with group-based project work.

The planned teaching will combine lectures, group discussions, self-study, supervision, and guest lectures from relevant industry actors.

Discussions and cooperation between the participants and initiatives towards the industry are important parts of the course.

The course can be given as a guided self-study if less than 6 students are registered.
