Title of the project: Computer Vision for Bridge Condition Monitoring

Project description

Alkali-Silicate (ASR) induces cracking in concrete bridges, consequently leading to structural performance degradation. To assess the severity of ASR-induced cracking and its impact on bridge serviceability, this study aims to develop a crack segmentation algorithm integrating state-of-the-art computer vision techniques with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspection, and to propose a high-precision algorithm for crack length and width extraction, with the objective of accurately quantifying crack distribution patterns. The crack distribution is mapped into virtual space through three-dimensional reconstruction, and the damage severity of concrete bridges is automatically evaluated through artificial intelligence methodologies.

Supervision: Daniel Cantero, Tengjiao Jiang, Terje Kanstad, Gunnstein Thomas Frøseth

Date of start of PhD: October 2025
