SAFE Centre officially opened in Gjøvik

Norway's Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance, Karianne Tung, officially opened the SAFE Centre at NTNU in Gjøvik. The opening brought together researchers, public-sector representatives and industry partners around a shared goal: improving Norway's ability to prevent digital fraud.

The minister emphasised that digital fraud has become a major crime problem and that the work established in Gjøvik matters for the whole country. Guests also saw demonstrations of biometric attack research, including face masks and other presentation-attack instruments used to evaluate the security of identity-verification systems.

SAFE is supported by Sparebankstiftelsen Hedmark, SpareBank 1 Østlandet and Mobai AS, together with NTNU. The centre combines research, testing, education and collaboration to strengthen trustworthy digital services.

Students can explore thesis projects connected to SAFE research and real-world fraud-prevention challenges. The exact scope, datasets and supervision plan are agreed before a project starts.

  • Injection attack detection: Securing camera, microphone and sensor pipelines against replayed, manipulated or synthetic biometric data.
  • Voice biometrics: Speaker verification, replay and synthesis attack detection, channel effects and robust evaluation in realistic communication scenarios.
  • Multimodal biometrics: Combining complementary biological and behavioural signals to improve security, resilience and user experience.
  • Synthetic biometric data: Generating privacy-aware face, voice or fingerprint data and measuring realism, diversity, utility and responsible use.
  • Cognitive authentication: Mapping user intent before and during authentication to identify manipulation, uncertainty and coercion.
