Materials Physics

Researchers in the TEM lab

The Materials Physics section deals with material science. The research is focused on nanoscale structure studies and connection to macroscopic physical properties, as well as fabrication and studies of optoelectronic materials. Activities include topics both in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics.

Strategically we are well positioned with respect to nationally prioritized areas. The division has been successful in attracting significant funding from national and European funding agencies and have close ties to Norwegian industry.

Research groups

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)

The transmission electron microscopy research group is active in broad range of projects within the field of materials physics including nanoscale structural studies and their connection to macroscopic physical properties.

Materials theory

Recent developments in computer hardware and computational algorithms have made it possible to study electronic structure and dynamics of systems with up to several thousand atoms.

Optoelectronic materials

Our group is interested in the interaction of light and matter, and the possibilities for making both passive and active devices from them.

NanoPhotonics and polarimetry

The group is involved in design, manufacture and metrology of novel optical functional materials ranging from nanostructures applied to Photovoltaic absorbers/ AR coatings, to metasurface based novel light weight lenses, polarimetric components, holographic elements, vector beams etc., primarily based on nanostructured surfaces and interfaces.
