Environmental and Analytical Chemistry - Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Science
Environmental and Analytical Chemistry

This field of study has two main disciplines
- Environmental Chemistry, with investigation of the effects of chemical compounds in nature (air, water, soil, food chains and organisms).
- Analytical Chemistry, with the development of analytical methods to be used to solve problems in environmental chemistry, such as environmental monitoring, studies of the quality of water and pollutants contents of effluents.
At the Department of Chemistry the Environmental and Analytical chemistry group offers a possibility to combine these two disciplines for research projects.
Research groups
EnviroChemistry Lab (Alexandros Asimakopoulos)
Environmental Chemistry / Analytical Chemistry (Øyvind Mikkelsen)
Environmental Health (Trond Peder Flaten)
Marine Chemistry and Biogeochemistry (Murat Van Ardelan)
One Health – A Multidisciplinary Quest for Optimal Global Health (Bo Yuan)
Structural Chemistry (Karina Mathisen)
Research activities in the group
- Multi-element analytical techniques for trace element studies and online monitoring of pollution
- Development of sensor systems and analytical routines, including quality assurance of environmental data (theoretical and applied aspects)
- Investigation of state of pollution of geographical areas of interest from local to global - with a specific priority on the marine and polar areas.
- Role of trace elements in medicine and biology, including biochemical and physiological behaviour and disease influence (HUNT)
- Development of analytical tools for monitoring environmental organic contamination
- Innovative analytical tools for cultural heritage studies
- Functional materials for pollution control and energy related issues
Projects
DiverSea (Coordinator)
Integrated Observation, Mapping, Monitoring and Prediction for Functional Biodiversity of Coastal Seas - HORIZON EU Project
Infrastructure
SFI/Centre for Research-based Innovation
CtrlAQUA (2015-2023)
CtrlAQUA - Centre for Closed-containment Aquaculture
SFI CtrlAQUA will lay the foundation for closed-containment containment concepts to reduce problems with mortality and sea lice, and to reduce the production time for salmon. Nofima AS hosts the centre.
