About the course
Course content
The principal instrument course requires significant independent study from the student. The tuition includes developing musical and instrumental skills with an emphasis on improvisation.
The ensemble course includes repertoire development, practice in improvisation, rehearsal techniques and band musicianship. The student will receive relevant studio training.
The course in aural training is a continuation of the corresponding course in MUSK4420. The course offers a foundation in basic musical training. With a practical and performative approach where imitation, improvisation and rhythm are essential factors, the course seeks to reflect music’s many expressions and contribute to mental and embodied musicality development.
The music theory course is based on the corresponding course in MUSK4420 and consist of an introduction to non-functional harmony and modal systems, score analysis, improvisational analysis, improvisational theory and technique, in addition to composing and arranging within the framework of the course. This course is closely related to the course in aural training and is intended to serve as a means of systematizing, raising awareness of and invoking reflection on the material and processes in play.
The course in composition is based on the corresponding course in MUSK4420 and develops the individual's music-generative qualities through aural composing and collective ensemble processes. The compositions are developed through analysis and the use of compositional tools. Various aspects of music technology, such as creative use of music software for live and studio processing.
The course in entrepreneurship builds on the course in music presentation in MUSK4420 and will create a consciousness about the processes required to create you own workplace. The course provides specialization in topics around the business, market, culture, industry and society, and strengthen awareness of their own arts.

Learning methods and activities
All musicians are fundamentally self-taught. Significant individual effort in all courses is required in order to succeed, particularly in regard to musical and instrumental skills. To qualify to take the final exam the student must have a minimum of 80% attendance in all courses.
Course in main instrument: Individual and group lessons. Work with instruments in the recording studio.
Course in ensembles: Group instruction in projects that are given in concentrated periods during the academic year.
Course in aural training: Group lessons. Embodied musicianship through singing, clapping and stomping.
Course in theory: Lectures. Mandatory practical or written assignments are given from class to class. The course is approved on the basis of the exercises.
Course in composition: A sufficient number of approved exercises and compositions. All compulsory assignments must be approved in order for the student to be assessed in the course. The course is approved on the basis of exercises and performed compositions.
Course in Jazz History: Lectures and reflection from a sociocultural perspective on music from different styles.
Course in entrepreneurship: Lectures. Mandatory practical or written assignments are given from class to class. The course is approved on the basis of the exercises.

Further on evaluation
Practical exam in main instrument, duration approx. 30 minutes. For those who take the exam in ensembles, the duration is approx. 45 minutes.
