About the course

Course content

This course covers advanced topics within finance and economics based on the courses above. Topics covers areas such as real option analysis / investment analysis, methods within financial econometrics, and financial optimization. Application areas may include energy economics and forecasting.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student should understand important analytical concepts, methods and models in finance and economics. Regarding research methodology, the student should be able to define a research question, apply a method, and understand and discuss results as well as being able to communicate the results and their implications. The candidate should also be able to present his/her own work as well as discuss other papers.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminar/student presentations and discussions, guest lectures. The course is in the form of intensive lectures with several hours per day, several days per week, during a limited number of weeks. Compulsory work: Presentations covering areas of the course.

Written exam counts 100% of the grade. There are compulsory presentations to be made by the students. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Required previous knowledge

At least one of the following two 4th year courses must have been taken: TIØ4140 Project Finance and TIØ4317 Empirical and Quantitative Methods in Finance. Students must also take Financial Engineering Specialization Project.

From 2026/2027, the requirement is tightened, so that TIØ4285 is no longer qualifying, and students need all of TIØ4145, TIØ4317 and TIØ4140.
