SUSTAINABLE

Campus leads the way in environmentally friendly solutions

Success criteria:

  • Campus is energy-efficient and has a low carbon footprint
  • Campus supports efficient and green transport and mobility
  • Campus is durable and follows environmentally friendly life cycles

Through the development and use of campus, NTNU’s academic communities will push the boundaries of knowledge for sustainable buildings and campus areas.

The campus must be energy-efficient, have low greenhouse gas emissions, and maintain a low overall carbon footprint. Technical infrastructure should form a fully integrated system with strong potential for efficiency and optimisation. During construction, transport to and from campus areas must be minimised through smart logistics planning and compact development.

Mobility to and from campus must be environmentally friendly and promote public health. Walking, cycling, and public transport will be prioritised, and it should be easy to choose walking or cycling when moving around campus. Spaces that support digital communication should be established as an alternative to less sustainable travel.

Buildings and infrastructure must be durable, long-lasting, and adaptable to changing needs. Campus development must be based on resource-friendly life cycles that minimise the flow of goods and materials while maximising their use before disposal. Reuse and transformation of existing buildings will be prioritised. Green spaces, park corridors, and cultural heritage should be preserved and integrated into campus development.
