About

About the course

Course content

Organic chemistry research and developmental project, synthesis of organic molecules based on literature or competence in the research groups, isolation and purification of organic chemical compounds, analyses of reactions (NMR, HPLC, GC, TLC), characterisation of products, research planning, finding and using external literature, writing a research dissertation.

Learning outcome

After ending the course you should: (i) make a safety job analysis on day-to-day chemistry project tasks based on material safety datasheets and the lab recipe, (ii) have knowledge reaching towards the research front in dedicated areas, (iii) be able to do experimental studies e.g. synthesis, isolation of compounds and analysis, (iv) based on your own results develop working hypothesis and plan your own work, (v) be able to use SciFinder for collecting chemical information, (vi) be able to choose a suitable analytic technique for analysing your reaction, (vii) be able to choose a suitable method for purification of products, (viii) have knowledge on how to optimise a purification method (column chromatography/crystallisation), (ix) be able to choose a suitable methods for characterising products, (x) be able to use practically several analytical methods (eg NMR, GC, HPLC, IR, UV), (xi) be able to write a research dissertation with reference, and (xii) give an oral presentation of project results.

Learning methods and activities

Individual research project conducted under personal supervision. Grade will be given based on experimental skills and a written report. The project includes an oral presentation (ca. 10 minutes). English teaching by request.

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the course is restricted to the program Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (MTKJ), 5th year student with specialization in organic chemistry. MIKJ, 2th year student with specialization in organic chemistry

Course materials

Information will be given in the beginning of the semester.
