Courses for exchange students
NTNU has campuses in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Ålesund. Note that you can only select courses in one city.
All students must fulfill the recommended/required previous knowledge for the courses that they wish to take. Please read the course descriptions carefully to make sure that you fulfill the requirements. Students not fulfilling the requirements may be denied admission. Second degree level courses are usually only available to master’s level students.
Exchange courses
Almost all of NTNU's courses are listed in the Online course catalog.
You can easily find all courses offered in English, by checking the box Taught in English. Remember to choose Trondheim as your teaching location.
There are a few things you should know before choosing your courses. Please see Tips for choosing and changing courses below before browsing the catalog.
The Online Course Catalog is updated yearly in July. Students applying for exchange in the autumn semester must use the course catalog for the previous academic year. Therefore, course contents and/or language of instruction may change between the time of your application and the semester start.
Norwegian language courses

You can find courses taught in English by the online course catalogue. Remember to check the boxes "taught in English" and "Gjøvik" as well as the correct semester (spring/autumn). Note that some courses have limited capacity/prerequisite knowledge.

Master's thesis:
- IMT4461 - Project work for exchange master's students (30 ECTS credits)
- IDIG4001 - Project work for exchange master's students (22,5 ECTS credits)
Note that for IMT4461, IDIG4001, as well as for bachelor thesis and project work, you will need to contact and make an appointment with a supervisor at NTNU in Gjøvik prior to application.
The first and third semesters are autumn semesters (A); the second and fourth semesters are spring semesters (S). Some courses are only available one semester each year.

Almost all of NTNU's courses can be found using the online course catalogue.
Below are some tips to guide you to select courses:
Note that you will not get double credits for courses with overlapping contents. Each course webpage lists what courses overlap under "credit reductions".
- Check the box 'taught in English' and select your campus city under "Teaching location".
- If the language of instruction on the course page is listed as "English / Norwegian", it counts as an English-taught course.
- If the language of instruction on the course page is listed as "English / Norwegian", it counts as an English-taught course.
- Courses listed for the autumn semester will normally be available each autumn semester.
- Different course levels may be called different names:
- Bachelor may be called "Foundation", "Intermediate" or "Third-year"
- Master's level courses are called "Second degree level"
- PhD courses are called "Doctoral degree level".
- Are you eligible? Check if the course requires previous knowledge and the language of instruction.
- You can choose courses at any faculties/departments as long as you qualify for the course.
- If a course is project-based, it can normally be supervised in English, even though the language of instruction is Norwegian.
- You are not guaranteed entry to the courses you select. The faculty/department decides whether you get admission to a course.
- Required/recommended previous knowledge:
- If a course has recommended previous knowledge, the course is generally open to exchange students, but it is up to the student to ensure they have the skills to follow the course
- If a course has required previous knowledge, the student must have academic experience equivalent to the listed required courses.
- Specific conditions:
- If a course page states that admission to a particular programme of study is required, it is generally reserved for students attending the relevant programme. However, exceptions may be made. Contact the course coordinator to inquire about admission.

- PhD level courses are usually reserved for PhD candidates and require special admission.
Changing your courses
You are able to change your study plan/course selection until the semester deadline (15 september / 1 February).
