Research group for instrumental, vocal and ensemble teaching (FIVE)

Ambitions and Plans

The group aims to strengthen research and development work in instrumental, vocal, and ensemble education at all levels, with particular emphasis on higher music education. We explore and further develop pedagogical practices, artistic development work, and learning processes within music education contexts. The work is relevant to the Department of Music at NTNU, contributing to knowledge development, pedagogical innovation, and sustainable educational models.

Specifically, the group works on:

  • Joint research projects on teaching methods, practice, motivation, and professional identity
  • Collaboration on applications to the Research Council of Norway and other external funding sources
  • Publications in national and international journals
  • Development and sharing of teaching methods, assessment practices, and use of digital tools
  • Seminars and workshops for professional and artistic development
  • Practice development in collaboration with music schools, upper secondary schools, and higher education institutions
  • Recruitment and support for PhD/postdoc positions and candidatesContributions to the department’s strategy for inclusion, diversity, and equality
  • Organizing open seminars and conferences to share knowledge and experiences

Activity

The group holds regular meetings and seminars (approximately 3–4 per semester), including open seminars for staff and students. We organize midterm and final seminars for master's and PhD students, as well as thematic seminars on current research and educational topics. The group encourages collaboration on publications and applications, and facilitates knowledge and experience sharing, including with external guests.

Participants

The group consists of internal and external participants, including lecturers, researchers, PhD candidates, and students from various study programs and institutions. The composition of the group reflects the department’s strategy for inclusion, diversity, and equality. We recruit and support new researchers in qualification pathways and actively involve PhD candidates and students in the group’s work. Links to relevant R&D projects can be added here.
