About the course
Course content
The course provides: 1) insight into health, safety, and environment (HSE); basic HSE knowledge, safety in the laboratory and field, as well as training in first aid and fire safety; and 2) insight into physical and mental health, focusing on health, the impact of life experiences, student support services, and financial planning.
Learning outcome
The course is divided into two modules:
Module 1: HSE, Fire Prevention, and First Aid
- Essential HSE knowledge to ensure personal and peer safety during studies.
- Understanding the HSE concept, goals of HSE work, and safe conduct in laboratories and in the field.
- Theoretical and practical basic training in first aid and fire safety.
- Practice in responding correctly in fire or accident situations.
Module 2: Physical and Mental Health; Life Experiences, Student Life, and the Future; Student Economy
- Insight into maintaining personal and peer physical and mental health, and awareness of student support services.
- Understanding how life experiences affect physical and mental health and knowledge of available support services.
- Introduction to financial planning and students' rights.
Learning methods and activities
Module 1: HSE, Fire Prevention, and First Aid
- Lecture and HSE (2 hours)
- Fire safety course: theory and practical exercises (2.5 hours)
- First aid course: theory and practical exercises (3 hours)
- Digital multiple-choice test (Blackboard) requiring sufficient points for approval.
Module 2: Physical and Mental Health; Life Experiences, Student Life, and the Future; Student Economy
- Physical and mental health in the autumn semester (2 hours)
- Life experiences, student life, future, and student economy in early spring semester (4 hours)
Lectures, exercises, and tests.
Compulsory assignments
- Theory - HSE, fire protection and first aid
- Practical exercises in fire protection and first aid
- Multiple choice tests HSE
- Physical and mental health
- Lived life, student life, future and student finances
Further on evaluation
Module 1: HSE, Fire Prevention, and First Aid
- Mandatory attendance at the practical courses.
- Pass the multiple-choice test (available on Blackboard in week 37).
Module 2: Physical and Mental Health; Life Experiences, Student Life, and the Future; Student Economy:
- Mandatory attendance at the lectures.
- Pass the multiple-choice tests.
Both modules must be approved to pass the course.
