About the course
Course content
The course provides:
- insight into health, environment, and safety; basic HSE knowledge, safety in the laboratory and in the field, as well as training in first aid and fire safety;
- insight into physical and mental health, support services for students, and financial planning; and
- an understanding of how life experiences influence in general and on interpersonal relationships.
Learning outcome
The course consists of three modules:
Module 1: HSE, Fire Safety, and First Aid
- essential knowledge about health, safety, and environment (HSE) to ensure one’s own and others’ safety throughout the study period
- understanding of the HSE concept, the goals of HSE work, and safe conduct in the laboratory and in the field
- theoretical and practical basic training in first aid and fire safety
- practice in responding correctly in situations involving fire or accidents
Module 2: Physical and Mental Health and Student Finances
- insight into how to take care of one’s physical and mental health, and knowledge of the support services available to students
- introduction to financial planning and the rights and entitlements students have
Module 3: Lived Experience and Interpersonal Relationships
- insight into how life experiences influence physical and mental health, and knowledge of the services available to students
- Insight into aggression, violence, and abuse, and which support services are available for students.
- how to build good interpersonal relationships

Additional Information:
To pass the course, all modules (sub‑assessments) must be passed.
In case of repetition, the sub‑assessments may be retaken individually.
If you have completed fire safety and first aid in HMS0002, it may replace the compulsory activity "Participation: HSE, fire safety, and first aid" in Module 1.
The assessment results in the course are valid for four semesters.
