About the course
Course content
At NTNU there are four ex.phil.variants. The variants have a common part constituting about 2/3 of the course and a variant part constituting about 1/3. The variants constitute an integral unit.
The course provides a wider perspective on university studies at NTNU through an introduction to the philosophy and history of science and philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy of relevance to students in the humanities and social sciences. The common part draws lines from Antiquitys worldview to discussions in our own time. It takes up different views of nature, man, knowledge, science, crafts/art, morality, politics, society, rationality and argumentation from both a historical and systematic perspective. The variant part focuses on political philosophy, hermeneutics, aesthetics, modernity and gender perspectives.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
- The student will have knowledge of basic concepts, important thinkers and positions in the philosophy and history of science and modern theory of science as well as knowledge of some basic concepts of logic and argumentation theory (see above).
- The student will have knowledge of the various traditions of political thought such as liberalism and its critics, in some selected topics in philosophy of art and aesthetics, modernity and gender issues, as well as hermeneutical issues related to science, culture and society (see above).
Skills
- The student will be familiar with and be able to discuss the arguments and central issues in the philosophy and history of science and theory of science.
- The student will be able to relate the different eras/topics to each other and understand the context of the history of thinking.
- Students will be able to reflect on and discuss issues in political thinking, aesthetics, modernity and gender issues, plus hermeneutic aspects of their own understanding of culture.
General skills
- The student will be able to relate reflectively to their own discipline and to science in general.
- The students will have the academic background to understand important current issues in politics, aesthetics, and gender debate and demonstrate and understanding of one's own time hermeneutical background.
Learning methods and activities
The course consists of lectures and seminars. Two assignments to be completed and approved to take the exam. The lectures present the main lines of the curriculum and provide a basic historical and systematic introduction to concepts and thinkers/positions. The seminars are teaching in small groups, where students work on exercises under supervision. The exercises should be written in groups of 3-5, but can also be written in pairs or individually. Through discussion and writing, students are trained in scientific and philosophical argumentation in both oral and written form.

Further on evaluation
Assessment is by 4 hour written exam (no materials). Letter grades are given. To take the exam, two exercises (assignment 1 and assignment 2) in EXPH0003 have to be completed and approved. In the case of retake previously approved exercises in EXPH0003 can replace similar exercises in the semester EXPH0003 is currently being taken.
